Advancements in technology have changed higher education classrooms into global, interactive spaces where students learn through hands-on simulations and via real-time video connections. To experience first-hand the advancements in education, look no further than Cleveland State University's (CSU's) Center for Innovation in Medical Professions (CIMP).

Located in downtown Cleveland on CSU's campus, the 3-story, 100,000 sq. ft. signature building houses audiology and simulation labs, occupational and physical therapy training rooms, distance learning classrooms, research areas, and meeting spaces where students from all medical disciplines can study and collaborate. Previously scattered throughout CSU's campus, CIMP is the new location for the School of Nursing, School of Sciences and Health Professions, and the Health & Wellness and Speech & Hearing clinics. Through a partnership with Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED), CIMP is also the permanent home for NEOMED's urban healthcare training program.

The project’s fast-track schedule, coupled with the fact that this was the university’s first CM At Risk project required a construction manager that embraced open-book communication and an OAC integrated team approach. Donley's IC met the aggressive schedule through weekly team meetings which included the CSU facilities staff responsible for maintaining the building in the future, by setting up early enabling packages, and through the coordination and multi-phased scheduling of trades. Design/assist, BIM coordination, LEAN practices, prefabrication, and mock-ups all played a role in keeping this project on schedule and within budget. The integrated team approach ensured a culture of safety was maintained which was a top priority since thousands of students and commuters pass by the site each day.

Ultimately, the biggest contributor to the project's success was the team itself. Beginning in preconstruction, the team worked from a plan and focused on open-book communication, both of which built trust among all involved. Mike White, Donley's IC superintendent, sums up the experience this way, "We had a team that became a family. We were unbeatable!"

Welcoming students in August 2015, this innovative example of how vision and teamwork come together will provide CSU/NEOMED medical students a state-of-the-art, collaborative learning environment for years to come.
