This project transformed the 10 acre space in the heart of Downtown Cleveland into an iconic urban park, complete with an event lawn, a speaker’s terrace, a centered water feature, and a café.

The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument remains as the iconic feature in approaching the Square from Euclid Avenue. The pedestrian walkway system integrates the Monument into the overall park and enhances accessibility to it. A distinctive paving pattern ties the perimeter walks with diagonal walkway ribbons extending from each corner and merging at the center of Public Square to create a pedestrian plaza.

Extensive relocation of the City’s major infrastructure systems that converged at the center of Ontario Street and Superior Avenue was a critical part of the project and included:

  • Relocation of 30” and 16” water distribution lines
  • Construction of high voltage primary duct banks and multiple smaller fiber optic duct banks
  • Demolition and reconstruction of buried fiber optic vaults around active cables
  • Installation of low and high pressure gas distribution lines
  • Replacement of 80+ year old steam distribution lines
