The renovation of Tucker Hall for the English department involved classrooms, an auditorium, faculty space, meeting rooms, and one large theater with sloped floor seating.
The building had undergone two additions since the original construction in 1908 (the last one being completed in 1928),resulting in misaligned floors, disjointedcirculation, and an overall lack ofunification. To integrate the disparateparts of the building, incorporate naturallight, and celebrate its well-lovedfeatures, the design for the renovationpreserved and updated an existing stairhall, re-opened a previously closedcupola, and created a tiered studentcommons as a means to facilitate studentand faculty interaction.
The scope of work included interiordemolition, asbestos abatement,an overhaul of the building’s utility systems, and upgrades in technology in the classrooms, as well as the adjustment of room layout and sizes. The modernization of all four levels included the addition of two egress stairs for code compliance, the addition of an elevator that can reach multiple levels of the building that are spread over three floors, and ADA compliance.
Although only required to achieve LEED Silver certification, the project earned LEED Gold certification.
