Company Background and History

Since 1956, the DiGeronimo Companies have been leaders in challenging site development, concrete construction, demolition, and environmental solutions. Independence Construction was formed in 2014 to bring a new approach to construction management and full scope execution of large commercial and industrial construction projects. Regardless of the service, our companies strive to push the envelope when it comes to adopting better methods for better results for our clients.

In July 2019, Independence Construction acquired Bear Construction, a 40+ year firm that provides general contracting, design-build, and construction management services throughout Western Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. With similar core values and an earned reputation for quality workmanship and integrity, the acquisition only made sense as Independence Construction expands its construction management services.

In October 2020, Independence Construction acquired the construction management business of Donley’s Inc., further expanding our capacity and ability to diversify our portfolio by creating one of the largest and most capable CM firms in Northeast Ohio. Our companies have been doing business together for 48 years, and adding their personnel and expertise in larger institutional projects is an ideal partnership.

In 2022, IC acquired Atlanta-based Winter Construction and Winter Environmental (The Winter Companies), further expanding its growth in the construction and development industry. With a similar vision in approach to the work performed and markets served, Winter was a natural choice for a strong strategic partner.

In order to build on our partnerships and relationships with clients in the Central Ohio market, Independence Construction opened its Columbus office in 2023. Located in Grandview Heights, the office is managed by Jason Rhodebeck, who has 25+ years of experience leading construction projects in the greater Columbus area. Our Central Ohio projects are managed out of this office.
